Additional Information
You should not have eaten or drunk anything for at least 10 hours before completing the checkup program as this may give false readings in some of the tests. Appointments are not necessary if you come to the hospital at 9.00 am Monday to Friday. At other times please contact the hospital to arrange an appointment. When registering with reception you should advise them that you require a checkup program.
Following registration, you will be asked to complete a survey form that obtains information about your, and your family's medical and health history. This information is used to profile your health risks and to give the doctor information about your general health. You will then be escorted through the various departments such as laboratory, x-ray etc depending on the program you have selected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I have a regular health checkup?
Regular checkups identify potential risk factors and medical problems early and prevents potentially serious illnesses. A checkup also manage your health risk profile and promotes a healthier lifestyle and a quality life.
What Program is right for me?
The content of routine health examinations for asymptomatic adults varies widely. The most obvious modifiers are age and sex; however personal, family and social history play a large role too. If required, screening for specific diseases could include:
Ovarian Cancer : Ultrasound of the abdomen is useful to screen for ovarian cancer for women over 40 years of age.
Prostate Cancer : The American Urological Association recommend that men over the age of 50 years be screened for prostate cancer with both an annual digital examination and a blood PSA. Screening at a younger age is advisable in men with a family history of prostate cancer.
Breast Cancer : Annual breast examinations are recommended for women after the age of 40. A strong family history warrants earlier and more regular testing.
Colon Cancer : Screening generally begins in both men and women at age 50 and includes a colonoscopy. Faecal occult blood testing are recommended yearly from 40 years of age. Colonoscopy has the advantage of identifying polyps and removing them for biopsy at the time of the procedure. Colonoscopy is an optional procedure but need only be done once in five years.
Coronary Artery Disease : Exercise Stress Testing (treadmill) is useful to look at the heart under exertion and recommended for men and women over age 40 and asymptomatic people with coronary risk factors. These factors include smoking, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, family history of heart attacks, etc.
Can information and results of my visit be shared with my primary care physician?
Yes. At your request, a summary and all test results can be sent to your physician for inclusion in your home medical file. In addition, you will have a notebook of information and test results to take with you once the program has been completed.
